Derek has worked in a variety of environmental consulting areas, including Title V air permitting and compliance, NSPS and MACT compliance, boiler tune ups, and enforcement and Consent Decree support. Over the last 9 years, he has specialized in assisting clients in the US refining and petrochemical sectors with the monitoring, operation, and regulatory compliance of industrial flares.
Derek assisted in the preparation of Flare Management Plans for refinery flares subject to the requirements of NSPS Subpart Ja and the Refinery Sector Rule, while also assisting with multiple flare-related Section 114 requests and the development of CD compliance documents. As recent flare regulations have expanded to the Ethylene Sector (EMACT) and the Miscellaneous Organic Chemicals Sector (MON), Derek began assisting petrochemical facilities subject to these rules with gap assessments and compliance preparation related to the updated regulations. Through this and other work, he has reviewed more than 300 industrial flares. This experience aided in the development and teaching of various flare courses, which have included a 1-day beginner level course, a 2-day advanced level course, and a 3-day expert course, as well as focused site-specific courses tailored to the specific needs of a client.
