Industrial Flare Services and Consulting
Industrial Flare Services and Consulting
Spectrum understands the need for facilities to maintain proper flare operation in order to minimize flare activities and achieve compliance with applicable current and imminent regulations. This can be a complex task, but our experts provide services to assist with every step of the process.
We assess the current state of your facility’s monitoring configuration and suggest improvements based on regulatory requirements and your flares’ unique operating conditions. Techniques like flare header mapping and source contribution analysis are used to develop plans for optimizing each flare system’s performance. In addition to generating these plans, we prepare and submit the documentation necessary to demonstrate compliance with MACT CC, NSPS Ja, local rules, and/or Consent Decrees.
Our industrial flare consulting services include, but are not limited to:
Conducting performance test programs that meet the applicable requirements of 40 CFR Part 63 Subpart EEE (Hazardous Waste Combustor MACT) and RCRA regulations, while maintaining permit operating conditions that allow operational flexibility can be a challenge.
Our objective is to assist clients in planning and successfully executing trial burns, risk burns, compliance tests, and other emissions testing while maintaining the desired flexibility. Spectrum succeeds through working closely with a client’s operations, engineering, management teams and the regulatory agencies. Careful planning, an understanding of the permit, the regulations and client communication are vital to success. Our personnel are experienced and uniquely talented in this complex and specialized testing. Spectrum provides onsite guidance and support to ensure a successful test program.
We provide support for a wide variety of subject areas where we strive to take a deep dive into the details in order to support a site at all levels, including environmental, engineering, instrumentation, operations, legal, and corporate.
Areas of additional environmental consulting expertise include, but are not limited to:

Ambient Air & Fenceline Monitoring
As concern over public exposure to hazardous air pollutants grows, ambient air and fenceline monitoring programs are increasingly being mandated to provide emissions data to facilities and their surrounding communities. Spectrum is experienced in constructing, operating, and maintaining the instrumentation necessary to provide high-quality, real time concentration data for various target pollutants along a given path.
We specialize in open-path (OP) Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Ultraviolet Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (UV-DOAS) monitoring systems, which, with a source of collocated meteorological data, can be easily integrated into a more complete ambient air or fenceline monitoring solution.
Through the use of our Tsunami™ Data Management System, Spectrum also offers the option of a private or public website displaying current and historical data, reports, public notifications, and any other related information.
Whether a short-term area monitoring project or a long-term installed system, Spectrum is involved every step of the way to ensure quality, reliability, and compliance.
Spectrum’s process monitoring systems and expertise gives valuable insight into what is happening before, during, and after your industrial processes. We use our extractive FTIR and FTIR Raman instruments to continuously analyze your gas sample from a variety of sources (stack exhaust, flare gases, process line, ambient air, etc.) in order to identify and quantify common constituents gases.
This information can be applied to properly tune your processes to promote efficiency, characterize emissions, determine appropriate control devices, and/or verify manufacturer specifications on existing control devices. We are flexible and work closely with our clients throughout testing to guarantee specific needs are met and you are walking away with the information you need.
The EPA and other regulatory bodies are shifting to FTIR and UV-DOAS techniques as their preferred methods of compliance testing due to their versatility and completeness. At Spectrum, we understand the need to adhere to specific test protocols and equipment specifications when conducting these compliance tests.
Collectively, our experts have over 50+ years performing extractive and open-path measurements across a multitude of industries in accordance with the most common published protocols (EPA Methods 320 and 321, ASTM D6348-12, EPA Protocol for Measuring Destruction or Removal Efficiency (DRE) of Fluorinated Greenhouse Gas Abatement Equipment Electronics Manufacturing, etc.). Our commitment to necessary test methods and/or specifications ensures that you are reporting the highest quality optical sensing data for any compliance needs.
Characterizing the gases from various sources and exhaust points within your facility is a crucial first step in emissions reduction and process optimization. Spectrum uses our state-of-the-art instrumentation (extractive FTIR, FTIR Raman, OP-FTIR, and/or OP-UVDOAS) and proven test protocols to continuously analyze gas streams of interest from these sources.
The data collected can be used to pinpoint atmospheric emission sources, determine appropriate control devices, test destruction, and removal efficiency, as well as verify manufacturer specifications on existing devices. No matter your application, our engineering test services give you the power to make well-informed decisions for your facility with high-quality data to back them up.
